UPDATE 12/30/2019 Here it is, 8 years after my first posts and my 2 teenage boys are no longer teenagers, but young men. A kindergarten teacher for 10 years now, my mission has always been to educate kindergarten students in an environment that is joyful, PLAYful (since we know this is the very best way 5-6 year olds learn), hands-on, and developmentally appropriate. This goal is NOT easy to achieve. Inappropriate practices are rampant in American K classrooms. Forcing children to learn skills which are out of reach (for now!) is the norm. In many schools administrators are providing schedules which squeeze out all play to fit in more "instructional time". In my book, the way things are being done in some kindergarten classrooms is criminal. My original purpose of this blog was to share precious interludes - moments of beauty, profundity or humor - from my classroom. My new goal for this blog is to use it to help get the word out about what I consider malpractice in the K classroom. I intend to fight this trend and to promote healthy, developmentally appropriate practices in the kindergarten classroom. Hope you will join me on this journey! SPRING 2012 I am the mom of two teenage boys and I am a kindergarten teacher. In my classroom, I have heard many nuggets of wisdom and beauty from my 5 and 6 year olds. They have also had me laughing out loud with things they say and do. They are intelligent, creative, honest, kind, compassionate, funny and profound. My students amaze me every day! On this blog, I'll share some of the things they say and do. You'll be amazed, too!
